CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

An effective component of treatment for your persistent or chronic pain!

Pain is fundamentally a positive sensation. It is your brain`s way of protecting you from potential danger in your body or environment. In the short term, pain causes you to modify your behavior to allow your body to heal and stay safe.

The scientific research on pain has exploded in the last 10 years.  We now know that injuries to joints and muscles, surgeries, and chronic illnesses not only affect the local area, but the nervous system as a whole.  Your nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord and 72 km of nerve fibers throughout your body!

Signs that an injury or illness may have overwhelmed your nervous system include:

  • Your injury hasn`t healed in the expected time frame
  • Your pain and tension increase over time
  • You are afraid to move or exercise
  • You have pain in new areas of your body
  • You feel more tired

Persistent pain and a sensitized nervous system CAN be minimized or corrected with the proper treatment approach.  CranioSacral Therapy is a specialized form of gentle manual (hands-on) therapy that reduces the sensitivity of your nervous system by softening fascial restrictions around your skull and spine and promoting deep relaxation.

CST can be used to treat:

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Concussions
  • Whiplash
  • TMJ Syndrome and orthodontic pain
  • Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Syndromes
  • Immune-mediated arthritis
  • Neurological Conditions
  • Periods of high physical or mental stress

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Your physiotherapist will gather much information related to your pain experience.  A thorough assessment of your mobility and function will be performed.  The treatment takes place in a quiet, private room where relaxation is maximized.   You can wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.  Your therapist will use light touch to release tension along your spine and skull and improve your nervous system function. Sessions can last from 30 to 60 minutes, and most clients report an improvement after 3-4 treatments.
